Inflammation of the Plantar Fascia can cause heel and/or arch pain, especially in prolonged standing and walking. A foot x-ray sometimes displays heel spurs. Heel spurs are often due to an over stretched plantar fascia. Here at Macintosh Lower Limb Clinic we specialise in diagnosing and treating the cause of the plantar fasciitis. The aim of treatment is to assist the patient to achieve a normal walking pattern, thus enabling the foot to work properly and taking the excessive strain from the plantar fascia and base of the heel bone. There is a strong link between calf muscle inflexibility, and therefore restricted ankle range of movement, and plantar fasciitis. Treatment thus addresses the root cause of the syndrome, and includes techniques such as massage, stretches, taping, specific exercises, and custom made orthoses.
